Hello and welcome to Knowing Your Onions. I started writing this blog a few years ago and it has been a fun journey for me; I hope exploring it will be for you!

Why did I start KYO?

I started this blog to fuse nutrition with tasty recipes. There is so much nutritional nonsense out there; I wanted to create a space where foodies could engage with evidence-based nutrition, learn about great new products or restaurants to visit, get a few simple and cheap recipe ideas or even learn to cook and gain confidence in the kitchen!

Why is KYO different from other blogs?

Whilst working on Knowing Your Onions, I have gone on a foodie journey from enthusiast to academic to healthcare professional; I have studied for a masters in Nutrition before training as a Dietitian, both at King’s College London. I know work as a dietitian in an NHS hospital. As a result, all the scientific information on this blog is evidence-based (IE no nonsense!).

However, accurate science alone is not enough. Nutrition is a science but it is also an art; it must be made understandable and engaging. In the wonderful words of Michael Flanders and Donald Swann:

“One of the great problems of the world today, is undoubtedly this problem of not being able to talk to scientists, because we don’t understand science. They can’t talk to us because they don’t understand anything else, poor dears.”

It doesn’t have to be like this. KYO translates the science of nutrition into articles for you to enjoy.

Why should you read KYO?

Everyone should be interested in nutrition; food is a basic part of our lives through which we can make a huge difference to our long-term health, so it is a real pleasure to share some of my knowledge with you. The recipes are categorised by meal for easy browsing but also diet and allergens, as I don’t want people with specific requirements to miss out on any of the fun!

Please browse, be inspired and have fun!
